Facebook & the Gospel
I was getting ready for Attic After School and I was running a little behind. As the students started filing in I was finishing up the last few touches. Two girls walked up to me and one of them said with a shaky voice “Katie, I want to get saved today.” I am a little ashamed at how surprised I was at this statement. “Okay, we can do that; give me a few seconds to finish this up and to grab my bible.” Then, the other girl said “I want to get re-saved too.”
This doesn’t just happen, does it? I mean, it’s supposed to happen after an amazing sermon and a time of worship. Or maybe after I asked her if she wanted to get saved. Teen girls don’t just go around asking if they can get saved. Right? But, it is then that I am overwhelmed with the fact that it has nothing to do with me. Nothing to do with the worship service at a camp, but it as to do entirely with God and his movement in these girls lives. And, only God. We are only, by some mystery, used as broken vessels by God to get his message out.
We talked about Jesus and his love for these girls. I compared her relationship with Christ to Facebook. And I told her that God has his friend request in, and she just needs to accept it. It’s funny, but she understood it. We ended our conversation with prayer and I got to hear the most beautiful sinner’s prayer:
“Dear God, I want you in my life. Thank you for dying for my sins. I accept your friend request. Amen”
Amen.
